Behind the Songs: Confessions

The final installment of our series, "Behind the Songs: Church or a Bar", is the 6th and final cut on the EP - a song titled Confessions. This song was written with Dane Louis and local musician Bruce Veneziani in the famed Red Room.

"This was a pretty quick write for us. I don't recall how it came about, but I had this lyric 'A church or a Bar, it's the same to some people' banging around in my head. And I sat down with those guys and we just started throwing ideas back and forth to each and with in 10 minutes we had written a song about how people view bartenders as their personal confidant.

I had a guy like Mac Dolan in mind, a local bar owner in Sioux City. He's a very likable guy, who has been behind a bar serving up drinks and advice alike for what seems like forever. So people have grown to like or trust him in a tell-all way.

Bruce being such a multi-instrumental kind of guy is the reason we have mandolin on the track. It gives it such a cool feel in my opinion. And Stevee nailed the intro of the song, just all around my favorite cut on the EP."

Confessions (B.Grillet/ B.Veneziani/D.Louis) 3:14

Church or a Bar it's the same to some people • Them old neon lights shine like a steeple • Well I pray for forgiveness from a Sin • Before I ask the bartender to fill me up again • And I'm down on my knees asking won't you forgive these confessions • Confessing your Sins to a man of the cloth • As he pours your wine • If you wanna pray you've gotta pay for God's time • And I know it's the end of the line • Well I raise my Hell on Saturday • And I'll be damned on Sunday • And I'll pray for redeeming Grace • But that won't be the last time I swear I'm gonna change my ways • Confessing your Sins to a man of the cloth • As he pours your wine • If you wanna pray you've gotta pay for God's time • And if you wanna pray you've gotta pay for God's time • And I know it's the end of the line • Confessing your Sins to a man of the cloth • As he pours your wine • And if you want to pray you've gotta pay for God's time • And I know it's the end of the line • Church or a Bar •
